So here we are again...back home! And here as promised a report on travelling long distance with a baby. Travelling with a baby is a lot easier, than people make you believe. For some reason quite a number of people told us afterwards or some even before travelling, that we are crazy to do this. But later they admitted that it actually was the perfect time for travelling.
We flew from Europe via Singapore to Sydney with Singapore Airlines. An Airline I can absolutely recommend when travelling with kids. The stewardesses and stewards were amazing with our little boy. He got so pampered by them! If you ask for it, they even have baby food on the plane. If your Baby is smaller than 74cm and lighter than 14 kg, they will provide a Bassinet that is attached to the front row walls of each compartment, this comes in very handy, as you don't have to have your baby on your lap at all times. The Bassinet needs to be booked when you book your flight. The reason why we booked our flight through the travel agency, but there is supposedly a way of doing it online, too.
And the Australians are a lot more child friendly then I ever experienced the Irish to be. And this is a statement that makes me very sad, and I never thought I would be saying this! So if you travel and want to see the world while your kids are little...Australia should definitely be on your list of locations.
We travelled along the east coast of Australia. Travelling in a motor home, made the journey through Australia for our son very easy. He is very sensitive to smells where he is supposed to sleep. So this way he had the same bed in the same "room" every night. And had no problem to settle in it at night. We brought our baby phone with us. That way we could leave the camper in the evenings, and meet up with other travellers in the BBQ Area. This actually gave us more freedom than we would have had at home.
For this road trip we quiet easily managed to arrange out daily travel times during our sons nap times. So yes that limited us to about 3 hours driving per day, but if you think about it, I don't think we would have done much more anyway, because there is always something worth seeing on the way, often enough even in less than 3 hours distance from the prior location.
Ok on the other hand we didn't do a lot of things that were on our list 5 years ago, when we originally planned this trip. On that list was a camel ride through the dessert, a ballon trip over Uluru, diving in the corals...there are things you just can't do when you have a baby on board. And you have to decide what is more important to you and your partner. Not seeing the country at all, because everybody says it is a deadly country with the most venomous animals of world (well the Australians have been raising kids in their country and strangely the people of Autralia haven't been extinct by those animals?!?) so that didn't put us off. Or not travelling because maybe you won't be able to do some of the things that make your dream vacation? Or leave your baba home with the grandparents and not see it grow and learn new things...we could have missed his first time standing free...his first time clapping hands...not seeing his beautiful smile, listening to his very infectious belly laugh, just to go travel the world...?? All these things not an option for us. Yes it was a very different travel from what we were used too, less party...but I also believe we actually got to know the Australians, otherwise we might have seen more of Australia (meaning the touristy places), but I doubt we would have gotten talking to Australians like we did.
So my verdict of exploring the world with a little toddler: GO! TRAVEL! Don't be held back by fears! Bad things can happen at home, too! But life is just to short to be bored at home!
I am sorry there are no pictures..yet...promise they will follow :-)
